環保用紙新趨勢

你有否察覺辦公室及電腦室的紙張改變了？別以為紙張的質素變差，那些都是無需砍伐樹木而製造的百分百再造紙。

樹木可吸收二氧化碳、釋放氧氣，幫助調節氣候，每一棵成熟樹木每年便可吸收約二十三公斤二氧化碳，因此破壞森林會直接令溫室效應加劇。

如必須用紙，亦可以用得環保，例如使用有森林管理委員會認證的紙張。森林管理委員會認證紙張的木源來自良好管理的森林，在不會損害森林生態下提供木材造紙。

然而，百分百再造紙更環保，因為其造紙過程不會砍伐樹木，而是以回收廢紙或農業廢料造紙，而且耗用較少能源，所產生的溫室氣體比普通紙張少約百分之二十至五十，加上製造過程會使用較少，甚或不使用含有氯的化學物料漂白，雖然紙張顏色較以往不同，卻能減少對自然生態和人類健康的損害。

為鼓勵各部門和學系節約用紙，大學於去年七月份實施「節約用紙政策」，全校的百分百再造紙使用量亦由二零零九／一零年度平均百分之三點六，增加至二零一零／一一年度首六個月的約四成。

浸大的信紙、信封、部分印刷刊物已全面使用百分百再造紙印製，除了行政部門外，浸大圖書館、各電腦中心也全面使用百分百再造紙。希望各同事、同學都能身體力行，做到惜紙愛樹，共同建構可持續低碳校園。

A new trend of using environmentally friendly paper

Have you noticed that the appearance of the paper you use in the office and computer centres has changed? That’s not because it’s inferior in quality. It is 100 per cent recycled paper, which is produced without having to cut down any trees.

Trees act as a climate control, since they absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. Each mature tree can absorb approximately 23kg of carbon dioxide a year. Thus, any damage to forests will intensify the greenhouse effect.

If you can’t avoid using paper, you could opt for paper accredited by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), paper that is processed using wood from well-managed forests that pose no damage to the ecosystem.

Therefore, 100 per cent recycled paper is friendlier to the environment as it is made from recycled used paper or agricultural waste, and no trees are cut in the production process. Moreover, less energy is consumed, reducing the greenhouse gas emissions by 20 to 50 per cent compared with non-recycled paper in general. Also, as minimal or no bleaching chemical is used, the production process and the end result are safer solutions for both the ecosystem and human health.

To encourage all departments and offices to use less paper, the University introduced the “University Policy on Paper Usage and Conservation” in July 2010. The usage rate of 100 per cent recycled paper has increased from 3.6 per cent on average in 2009/2010 to approximately 40 per cent in the first six months of 2010/2011.

Currently all letterheads, envelopes and certain publications are printed using 100 per cent recycled paper. Apart from administrative offices and the Library, the User Computer Centres also adopted 100 per cent recycled paper. Hopefully, all colleagues and students will take steps to use less paper, working towards a low carbon campus.

響應惜用資源　浸大接力地球一小時

香港浸會大學響應地球一小時運動，於二零一一年三月二十六日晚上八時三十分關掉校園內部份非必要電燈一小時。一群熱心的學生校園綠色大使於二零一一年三月二十一日至二十五日向大學社群宣傳地球一小時活動，得到百多名學生及職員簽名支持，他們更承諾實踐低碳生活。

HKBU supports resources conservation through participation in Earth Hour

HKBU turned off part of the non-essential lights for an hour on 26 March 2011 at 8:30PM in supporting Earth Hour. During 21 to 25 March 2011, our Student Campus Green Ambassadors promoted this event to the University community. Over 100 students and staff signed a pledge to support the event and they also pledged to adopt low carbon practices in their lives.
