Green Purchasing Success
According to Mr. Timothy Lam, Assistant Director of Finance, the University has won a Gold Prize in the Green Purchaswi$e Award (Corporation) category of the Hong Kong Green Awards 2010, the only tertiary institution to receive a prize in the Awards. Mr. Lam said that receiving the award was both surprising and encouraging and he believes that this recognition will encourage more staff, students and even other universities to opt for green products more often.
HKBU was the first university in Hong Kong to join the Hong Kong Green Purchasing Charter as a Fellow Member. The University began green purchasing in 2000 and adopted a Green Purchasing Policy in 2008. Mr. Lam noted that “environmental protection is a global trend. The International Federation of Purchasing and Supply Management endorsed the adoption of green purchasing two years ago in Las Vegas. We are looking to the future and are committed to staying on the right track.”
He added: “HKBU currently purchases 35 categories of environmentally-friendly products. These include 100 per cent recycled paper, stationery, cleaning products and electrical appliances. This year, the University will introduce 10 more categories of products such as biological diesel and green vehicles. The lighting above the audience in the Academic Community Hall has also been changed to LEDs. It is the first hall or lecture theatre in Hong Kong to use LED lighting.”
Lam added that the University fully supports the use of green products, despite their higher cost, making it a pioneer in green purchasing and ensuring its leading position, among local universities, in promoting low-carbon initiatives on campus.
The Assistant Director of Finance also noted that the University initially went through a great deal of trial and error due to the often poor quality of past green products. “For instance,” he stated, “in the early years, recycled paper was not suitable for printing and copying. We could only use 80 per cent recycled paper. It was only recently, when the quality improved, that we decided to change to 100 per cent recycled paper”. Indeed, it is the University’s gradual adoption of green products according to its needs, as well as the strong support of staff and students, that has made HKBU’s efforts in green purchasing so successful.
HKBU also chooses environmentally-friendly suppliers. For example, caterers bidding for the student restaurant tender are required to state whether they can provide biodegradable containers. Policies such as these help to strengthen a low carbon culture on campus

Where does the plastic waste go?
To foster a low carbon campus, HKBU has recently joined the “Yan Oi Tong EcoPark Plastic Resources Recycling Scheme” with the aim of including all plastic waste in campus recycling. Some small size plastic waste such as stationery, plastic bottles and plastic bags can be placed in waste recycling stations on each floor. Plastic waste in larger sizes, such as furniture and banners, can be deposited in recycling bins at the following locations:
- Podium 5, Cha Chi-ming Science Tower, Ho Sin Hang Campus
- Beside Carpark A entrance, Shaw Campus
