If the rate of harvesting and consumption is greater than the reproduction rate, more and more species, habitats and resources will disappear more quickly than we can imagine! The Council for Sustainable Development (the Council) is carrying out a public engagement on sustainable consumption of biological resources and invites public views on three major aspects: You are sincerely invited to send us your views on or before 15 November 2016 as well as join our engagement events. The public engagement document and information on engagement events are available at the Council’s dedicated website at www.susdev.org.hk. With a view to reinforce in our University community the habit to reuse and recycle of red packets so as to reduce the unnecessary paper waste through distribution of Red Packets custom, the University joins “Lai See Packets Recycling and Reuse Campaign” organised by Greeners Action for two years in a row. Last year, more than 6,000 used red packets had been collected. This year, we have received 2,000 used red packets from Greeners Action to distribute to the University community FREE OF CHARGE before the CNY. We hope that the habit of reuse and recycle of red packets may gradually be instilled so that paper, trees and our environment can be saved. Small Electrical Appliances Recycling Programme The electrical appliances may be small, but their impact is “big” when more and more waste electrical appliances accumulate in the landfills. Each year, Hong Kong households and corporates throw away more than 70 thousand tonnes of computers and electrical and electronic equipment. Some of these items are still in good working condition and could be put to second-hand use. All of them contain components and materials that could be recovered for reuse and recycling, such as metals and plastics, according to Environmental Protection Department. To reduce the quantity of waste electrical appliances disposed of at landfills, this year, the University collaborates with the Kowloon Bay Material Transfer Centre and organise a “Small Electrical Appliances Recycling Programme” before the CNY. Kowloon Bay Material Transfer Centre will help to transfer the waste electrical appliances collected by the University to charitable organisations such as St. James Settlement and Caritas-HK Computer Workshop for recycling or to send to those in need. Don’t Wait! Come Now! Get your “Reusable Red Packets” or donate your unwanted electrical items! Check out the latest issue of the HKBU Sustainability e-Newsletter!
