- Embrace Low Carbon Lifestyle Photo Competition 2011

- To encourage the University community to embrace low carbon lifestyle, the Task Force on Sustainable Campus and HKBU Photographic Association organised the “Embrace Low Carbon Lifestyle Photo Competition” which had come to a successful end with over 300 entries received. All submissions fully displayed the creativity of the University community on low carbon lifestyle and how they translated their low carbon ideas into action.

Earth Hour 2012
- Date: 31 March 2012
- The University showed its concern for the environment by continuing our support to the World Wide Fund Earth Hour 2012, a global initiative to call for action on climate change. Non-essential lights on campus were turned off from 8:30 pm for an hour on 31 March 2012. Between 26 and 30 March 2012, our Student Campus Green Ambassadors promoted this event to the University community on campuses. Over 200 students and staff signed to support the event and also pledged to go beyond the hour by adopting low carbon lifestyles.

Combating Climate Change Campaign: Roving Exhibition for Global Warming and Climate Variation

- In order to enhance BU students’ and staff’s understanding on the impacts of climate change on the environment, the Task Force on Sustainable Campus displayed a series of exhibition boards “Combating Climate Change Campaign: Roving Exhibition for Global Warming and Climate Variation” from the Polar Museum. Through this exhibition, students and staff realized the major threats to the animals on the planet and how their lives are changing due to the climate change, thus reflecting on what changes in their lifestyles can be made in response to these environmental problems.

CCL Seminar: Polar and low carbon life

- The Task Force on Sustainable Campus invited Dr. Rebecca Lee Lok-sze to share her experience in polar expedition and the importance of low carbon life. More than 70 students and staff attended the talk and many were inspired by Dr. Lee’s passion towards environmental protection and conservation.

25th Anniversary of EPD Roving Exhibition

- To celebrate 25 years of the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) serving Hong Kong, the Task Force on Sustainable Campus assisted in EPD’s roving exhibition on campus, showcasing EPD's commitment and work, in partnership with the community, to enhance our environment and quality of life. Public promotional clips produced by the EPD over the years were also on display.

Low-carbon Ambassador Programme

- With the support of the HKBU Stragetic Development Fund, the Task Force on Sustainable Campus has established the Low-carbon Ambassadors Programme in training HKBU students on low carbon lifestyle and promoting the low carbon messages to the community. The Low-carbon Ambassadors Programme has organised more than ten low carbon activities from September to December 2011 in enhancing the low carbon awareness among the University community with more than 1,000 participating students and staff. After a series of training, the Low-carbon Ambassadors will organise a variety of low carbon events in promoting green living

“Cherish Books · Love Trees” The Used Book Sale Campaign

- The first used book sale campaign organized by the Task Force on Sustainable Campus and Student Union jointly made its success. More than 500 used textbooks and leisure books were collected from the University community, which gained a big popularity among students at the beginning of this semester. The profit generated from this campaign will be donated to Oxfam Hong Kong using to reduce poverty and against climate change in developing countries. Books left from this campaign will be donated to the Salvation Army Hong Kong to help low income people in Hong Kong.

HKBU introduces first electric car to its fleet to promote low carbon campus

To promote the University’s sustainable development and to lessen the carbon emissions generated from its daily operations, HKBU recently acquired a five-seater electric “Nissan LEAF” car with support from the University’s Strategic Development Fund. Being the first electric car with zero emission in the University’s fleet, the Nissan LEAF is a 100 per cent electric-powered car which does not require the combustion of fossil fuels and no carbon dioxide is emitted while it is being driven.
Mr. Andy Lee, Vice-President (Administration) and Secretary, who is the Chairman of the Environmental Health and Safety Committee, said: “The University’s introduction of an electric car is in line with the direction of Hong Kong’s ‘green transport’ development advocated by the HKSAR Government. The University would continue to consider purchasing green cars and to encourage staff to use green cars.” He said the University is committed to reducing carbon emissions in different areas to fulfill its social responsibility to combat global warming.
Currently, the University has set up an electric car charging station at the parking lot on the second floor of Sir Run Run Shaw Building on the Ho Sin Hang Campus, and will set up more charging stations at other campus parking lots.

Low Carbon Ideas Challenge

The Low Carbon Ideas Challenge Competition was held in April 2011 to invite University community to share their innovative initiatives to reduce carbon emission. Over 100 entries were received from HKBU staff and students and the entries were of high quality. The ideas could effectively reduce the carbon emission of the University and encourage the University community to live green. The Task Force is going to adopt some of the ideas in HKBU progressively. The prize presentation ceremony was carried out in August 2011. Low Carbon Tour @ Science Open Day 2011

Task Force on Sustainable Campus collaborated with the Faculty of Science of HKBU to organise the Low Carbon Tour during the Science Open Day on 5th July 2011. Over 130 students and teachers from local primary schools experienced the Low Carbon Tour on the day. They visited the green terraces at Shaw Campus, to learn about the benefit of greening to the environment, plant species and their values. Students showed their great enthusiasm to know about the low carbon initiatives.

Exploration Tour @ Waste Treatment Facilities in Hong Kong

To learn more about waste treatment facilities in Hong Kong, our Campus Green Ambassadors visited the Chemical Waste Treatment Centre and Eco-park on 11th June, 2011. Participants were keen to raise questions and exchanged their views with the representatives of the companies. They commented the visit was very fruitful as they had been provided an opportunity to learn and understand more about environmental protection activities in Hong Kong.

Recycle with Love Mission

A five-day recycling campaign was held in the Student Residence Halls to collect recyclables before students’ check out period. Students showed their full supports by donating old clothing, bed sheets, electronics, packaged food, etc. for recycling. The collected items excluding food were donated to the University YMCA-HKBU (Association) for a charity sale. The revenue generated will be used to subsidise any on-campus activities organised by the Association. Meanwhile, the food items that are safe to consume were donated to food bank which will then be distributed to the needy. To put waste recycling into practice, old banners were reused as exhibition panels for this activity and decorated with fallen leaves.

Cherish Book Love Trees @ Texbook Collection

The Task Force on Sustainable Campus and the HKBU Student Union co-organised the inaugural second-hand textbooks market on HKBU campus to encourage reuse of textbooks and reduce the economic burden of students. Over 120 textbooks were collected in which some were simply donated to this event. The old books collected will be selling in September 2011, details will be announced in due course.

Tree Planting for Carbon Reduction

Our Campus Green Ambassadors has participated in the tree planting event organized by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department. Their green hearts boosted their spirits in the early morning and they climb the steep slope at Ngong Ping. Over thousands of trees were planted on that day which makes a greener environment in Hong Kong.

Environmental Drama Performance

The Task Force on Sustainable Campus, the Arts Faculty and the Mandarin Drama Performance Association joined hands in organizing two environmental drama performances on campus. The director, Miss Xu Qing-yuan, a first year undergraduate student of the Department of Religion and Philosophy, cares much about maintaining a sustainable future of our planet and expresses her viewpoints in the drama, Blind Seeing and the World of Clockwork Spring. The performers vitalized the characters using their body languages and delivered the message of inter-relationships between human and the environment by dynamic dialogues. The dramas not only received great support from the University community, it also attracted audiences from the other local tertiary institutes. Audiences were keen to discuss with the performers and shared their views on the environmental protection issues.

Green Dinner

An event named "Green Dinner" was organized with the support of the Student Campus Green Ambassadors aiming to enhance the awareness of low carbon diet among students. Dr. William Yu from the World Wild Fund-Hong Kong was invited to give a talk “Ecological Footprint and Low Carbon Diet”. In addition, Green Ambassadors prepared two games related to low carbon dinning, topics and the participants enjoyed a low carbon meal in that evening.

Visit to Mai Po Nature Reserve

The Student Campus Green Ambassadors visited the Mai Po Nature Reserve on 6 March 2011. They left the classrooms and entered to this wonderful place to learn the ecology of the marsh and the wetlands. Through this visit, the students realised the importance of natural conservation and they would love to share the message with their family members and friends.

Eco Fashion Show and Design Contest: Reuse the old banners

HKBU held Annual Christmas Dinner to celebrate the festival with colleagues. This year’s Christmas Dinner themed “A Green Christmas”, aimed at reminding colleagues to conserve resources and to be environmentally friendly while celebration. To further arouse colleagues’ environmental awareness and to encourage their creativity, “Eco Fashion Show and Design Contest” was organised during the Christmas Dinner. Representatives from the Task Force on Sustainable Campus won the championship, by a rain coat made by the old backdrop banner of “HKBU Sustainable Low Carbon Campus Launching Ceremony”. The rain coat can be reused for many times. Also, with the grassland pattern of the banner as the main pattern of raincoat, it presents the feeling of being close to the nature.

There are number of promotional banners hanging around HKBU campus, however, most of them become trash after activities. The banners can actually be reused if we consider more. For example, by avoid printing the date of activities on the banner if the activities will be held for many times. For those banners that cannot be reused, they should be sent to the banner recycling cage besides Cha Chi-ming Science Tower on Ho Sin Hang Campus, or the cage near entrance of Car Park A on Shaw Campus. Those banners will be recycled as different plastic products.

HKBU awarded gold prize in Hong Kong Green Awards 2010

Hong Kong Baptist University recently received a Gold Prize in the “Green Purchasewi$e Award (Corporation)” category of the Hong Kong Green Awards 2010. HKBU is the only tertiary institution to have won a prize in the Awards, which are organised by the Green Council.

HKBU is the first university in Hong Kong to join the Hong Kong Green Purchasing Charter and to have adopted a Green Purchasing Policy, which has been in place since 2008. Under this policy, a set of specifications and criteria for environmental friendly products has been established for more than 35 categories of products in extensive use at the University, including paper, stationery, cleaning products, and electrical appliances. Apart from the above, more products are under consideration, including electric or hybrid vehicles.
HKBU Sustainable Low Carbon Campus Launching Ceremony

HKBU officially launched its Sustainable Low Carbon Campus Project on 1 Nov 2010. Officiating at the ceremony were Mr. Edward Yau, Secretary for the Environment, HKSAR; Professor Albert Chan, President and Vice-Chancellor; Mr. Andy Lee, Vice-President (Administration) and Secretary cum Chairman of the Environmental Health and Safety Committee; and Professor Jonathan Wong, Professor of Biology and Convenor of the Task Force on Sustainable Campus.
At the ceremony, Mr Yau said he was delighted to see a good demonstration of the leaders of tomorrow who would take the initiatives to develop a sustainable low carbon campus; Prof. Albert Chan said that as an environmentally conscious tertiary institution that prides itself on Whole Person Education, HKBU should have a clear goal for each of our communities to achieve a low carbon future; Mr. Andy Lee highlighted the major achievement so far in building a low carbon campus.
To appreciate departments’ and offices’ efforts to reduce paper consumption, certificates were presented to the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, the Department of Computer Science, the Department of English Language and Literature, the Office of Information Technology and the School of Continuing Education during the ceremony.

Forum on Climate Change and Campus Sustainability

Task Force on Sustainable Campus and the Sino-Forest Applied Research Centre for Pearl River Delta Environment organised the Forum on Climate Change and Campus Sustainability on 1 Nov 2010. The forum invited overseas speakers and representatives from local institutions to participate. This forum aimed to provide a platform for exchange of ideas among local and overseas universities while further exploring new initiatives in environmental protection and sustainability.
Mr. Bart Meehan from The Australian National University spoke on “Campus Sustainability – The Holistic Approach” while Professor Yeh Shin-cheng from National Taiwan Normal University spoke on “Green University Initiatives in Taiwan: History, Progress and Perspectives”. Representatives from local tertiary institutions and the University of Macau shared their ideas and experiences during the sharing session.

HKBU Low Carbon Week

Global concern on climate change has gained momentum in recent years and has remained a top agenda among the international community. HKBU should take the lead to reduce their impacts on the environment and strengthen the environmental literacy of the future leaders. - No Straw and Plastic Bag Week

Plastics are difficult to decompose after the disposal. By reducing the usage of straws and plastic bags can relieve the burden on local landfills. Staff and students were encouraged not to use straw and plastic bags in all canteens of HKBU campus during the No Straw and Plastic Bag Week from 1 to 5 Nov and they showed great support to the campaign.

Another way to promote low carbon living culture is through music. Task Force on Sustainable Campus and the Sound Union organised the Low Carbon Concert on 5 Nov. The concert was mastered by Dr. Wong Chi Chung, Lecturer of BA in Liberal and Cultural Studies. He shared some overseas pop songs which bring message of environmental protect with the audiences. Ms Kay Tse, the famous pop song star shared her green practices at home. Other performing parties including the Pancakes, inLove, Senza A capella shared their wonderful songs with the audiences.
- Car Free Week

In response to air pollution and climate change, HKBU organised the Car Free Week from 1 to 5 November, 2010. Drivers were encouraged to drive less and use public transport in the week and a total of 43 driving days were avoided. We would like to express our appreciation to the below participants:

- To encourage the University community to embrace low carbon lifestyle, Task Force on Sustainable campus and HKBU Photographic Association organised the “Embrace Low Carbon Lifestyle Photo Competition”. About 400 photos were received from HKBU staff and students. The entries were of high quality and most of them addressed the issue of low carbon living that would encourage people to embrace low carbon lifestyle.

HK No Air Con Night

Air-conditioning accounts for around 60% during July to August and around 30% of all electricity end-uses in Hong Kong throughout the year. “Hong Kong No Air-con Night” is a territory-wide promotional event related to reduction and wise use of air-conditioning, which targets on general public including Hong Kong households, government officials and university hostels.
On 29 Sept 2010, HKBU participated “Hong Kong No Air-con Night” with a total of 734 HKBU students and staff supported the event, including 520 HKBU student residents and 6 Dr. Ng Tor Tai International House student residents. This event encourages HKBU student residents avoid the use of air conditioner and save energy.

Campus Green Ambassador Orientation & Training Session

They were briefed about the sustainable low carbon campus project, role of campus green ambassadors and HKBU low carbon initiatives. The campus green ambassadors were keen in sharing daily low carbon actions to each other and views in organising green event.

- For the purpose of establishing an interactive platform for low carbon idea exchange among the University community, a HKBU Sustainability Website has been launched on June 2010. The website is the first local University website focusing on developing towards a sustainable low carbon campus. The website not only provides a variety of sustainability-related information and resources for the University community, but also allows the public to access our policy, directions and targets on sustainable development. In addition, the website includes news of University’s low carbon events; update of the campus green ambassador engagement network and introduction of HKBU’s environmental-friendly initiatives. Furthermore, low carbon tips for different settings e.g. campus, offices and households are provided in the website.
- To solicit views and opinions and to facilitate discussions among the University community, a page on Facebook is created. We welcome students, staff, alumni and other University stakeholders to join our low carbon community and to foster a sustainable future. Please visit the website and leave us your views and suggestions on sustainability development for our University.
- Art Exhibition: E-waste fighter

- Hong Kong people produced 5.41 million e-waste in 2008 of which 80% were exported, hardly can we imagine the potential impacts to the environment. To increase the understanding of e-waste pollution among the University community, an art exhibition with display boards was held.
- Besides, to encourage the University community on recycling, the Task Force on Sustainable Campus and the Office of Student Affairs jointly organized a recycling programme in the residential halls.
- Roving Exhibition: Seafood Choice Initiatives
- Date: 27 April - 7 May 2010
- With the fame of “City of Dining” of Hong Kong, an ocean tragedy happens underneath. Regarding the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization Report 2007, every single person in Hong Kong consumed 62 kg of seafood in 2005. That was 3.6 times higher than the global average. Much destructive fishing technologies are adopted in order to fulfill the ever-growing seafood demand. As a result, the most commercially important seafood species, such as bluefin tuna, swordfish and Atlantic cod, have already been fished out for more than 90% in the past 50 years. In order to enhance the awareness of sustainable seafood choice among the University community, a roving exhibition was organised on campus.
- Taste with Low Carbon Style
- Date: 30 April 2010
- With an aim to promote low carbon and healthy diet to the University community, a low carbon dining event was organized for students and colleagues. Movie about green diet and roving exhibition entitled “Healthy Diet Healthy Ocean” were shown to the participants. In addition, Dr. S.S. Chung, Assistant Professor of Department of Biology, was invited to share her views on low carbon lifestyle. The second part of the event was a low carbon nutritional lunch set prepared for each participant. In support to environmental protection, most of the participants brought their own lunch boxes and dining utensils.
- Roving Exhibition: Let’s Save Bluefin Tuna
- Date: 12-23 April 2010
- From eating habit to sustainable lifestyle! Due to the overfishing of bluefin tuna with relation to the pursuit of fine dining, the number of bluefin tuna has dropped drastically to an endangered level. In order to protect our precious bluefin tuna, the University supported the conservation campaign organized by World Wild Fund. A roving exhibition was arranged on campus. About 100 students and staff had become a “Bluefin saver” and signed the pledge not to eat bluefin tuna and against any bluefin tuna to be sold in Hong Kong.

- Campus green ambassadors composed of students and staff of the University. The appointed campus green ambassadors attended the briefing and training sessions and were briefed about the green facilities on campus, sustainability policy and the role of campus green ambassadors, etc. The campus green ambassadors were keen to share their views and green tips were distributed to them so as to convey the green messages to their colleagues, classmates and family members.

- Formulation of a sustainability policy is an impetus towards a sustainable low carbon campus. Two consultation sessions were held by the Task Force on Sustainable Campus with the aims to solicit views of the University community and to facilitate discussions over the policy.
