HKBU Sustainability

To consider the better environment for the future generation, our environmental awareness has been growing as a result of the new dimension of environmental protection - Sustainability.
Sustainability is improving the quality of human life while living within the carrying capacity# of supporting eco-systems (IUCN, UNEP, WWF (1991), Caring for the Earth: A Strategy for Sustainable Living, Gland, Switzerland)

#The carrying capacity of a biological species in an environment is the population size of the species that the environment can sustain indefinitely, given the food, habitat, water and other necessities available in the environment.(English Collins Dictionary)

Origin of Sustainable Development
The key concept was ignited from “Our Common Future” from the United Nations World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED) published in 1987 and the adoption of Agenda 21 of the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio established the Commission of Sustainable Development. Four main approaches were outlined in the Agenda 21:
(1) Social and Economic Dimensions (2) Conservation and Management of Resources for Development (3) Strengthening the Role of Major Groups (4) Means of Implementation
Sustainable Development by the United Nations’Definition: “meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”
