  • “Climate change is a change of climate which is attributed directly or indirectly to human activity that alters the composition of the global atmosphere and which is in addition to natural climate variability observed over comparable time periods.” (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC))
Impacts of Climate Change
  1. Average surface temperature rises, melting of glaciers, ice caps, global average sea level rises, flooding threats to the low lying areas.
  2. Frequent extreme weather conditions, e.g. hot waves, heavy rain, droughts and typhoons.
  3. Desertification expansion, inhibit destruction, species extinction and ecosystem distortion.
  • Addressing Climate Change
  • In December 1997, the Kyoto Protocol, an international agreement which linked to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), was adopted in Kyoto, Japan. The major feature of Kyoto Protocol was that it set binding targets for industrialized countries in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. These amounted to an average of 5% against 1990 levels over the five-year period (2008-2012).
  • During the 15th session of Conference of the Parties held in Copenhagen, Demark in December 2009, UNFCCC proposed new climate change mitigation upon the expiration of Kyoto Protocol soon in 2012. Unfortunately, the new agreement was not adopted, and the subject will be included in the agenda of the next 16th session of Conference of the Parties. This session will be held in Cancun, Mexico in the end of 2010.
